Children and Adult Beginner Programs
Contact Kathy to inquire about lessons for more experienced riders.

For adults and children just starting, we offer a super beginner program. All our beginner riders are started in Beginner Private Lessons to ensure a safe and confidence-building start to your riding experience.  We also offer a price break, as Beginner Private Lessons are priced the same as our group lessons.

Each Beginner Private Lesson is divided into two parts -  learning how to halter, lead, groom, tack up and safely handle the horse from the ground (called ground work) and the basic controls of walk on, halt, turning and trotting while riding the horse.

To begin with, the rider is longed when riding, with the instructor controlling the movements of the horse.  As the rider gains more experience and confidence, he/she is let off the longe line, first at the walk and then at the trot.  Once the rider is able to control the horse at the trot off the longe line, he/she then progresses to adult or children's group lessons. Group lessons have a maximum of 4 riders to ensure each person receives lots of personal attention.

Riders learn at their own pace, so there is no set number of Beginner Private Lessons that are required.  Students are required to take a minimum of one lesson per week.

A riding hard hat, boots and crop are required. Greenhawk Harness & Equestrian Supplies, 7154 West Saanich, Brentwood Bay, has an excellent deal on a "Back to Lessons" package.  You get a hard hat, boots, crop, breeches, half chaps and gloves for $129.

Undecided as to whether to enrol your child in riding lessons?  Read "A Father's Explanation" and this may explain why children and adults love horses and grow from their association with horses.

Email or phone Kathy at 250-544-0737,  to register for a trial lesson.

"
Kathy Harrison is a riding teacher and horse owner EXTRAORDINAIRE. From the moment I met Kathy I knew my daughter was in the best hands possible. Kathy does not treat riding lessons as a job, it is her life. Kathy has a calm, kind and reassuring manner, and offers encouraging comments that allow my daughter to feel confident, secure and happy when riding. Kathy's knowledge and years of commitment to Horsemanship is evident in the excellent lessons, camps and clinics she provides at Shannick Farm. I highly recommend Kathy Harrison School of Horsemanship and would encourage anyone to seriously consider Kathy's expertize, its been a pleasure knowing Kathy Harrison." Cheryl
